TEXAS AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER SID MILLER CONGRATULATES WOODVILLE ISD'S CHILD NUTRITION DEPT. FOR REACHING TOP LEVEL IN THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE FARM FRESH CHALLENGE

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller recognized the WISD's Child Nutrition Department with a Best of the Bunch Award for its success in the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) 2019 Farm Fresh Challenge.  Every October, participating schools pledge to incorporate more local products in meals and provide important lessons about healthy lifestyles and Texas agriculture. WISD earned the Best of the Bunch Award for completing the challenge parameters--Eat Local. Teach Local. Be Social--and demonstrating its commitment to using Texas agriculture to build healthier campus environments.

"You can't put a price tag on the value these kids get from eating healthy foods at school," Commissioner Miller said. "And to top it off, they are eating the best food in the nation grown right here in Texas by local farmers and ranchers. Bringing these healthy Texas foods to school meals teaches children about the value of agriculture and boosts local economies."

Millions of Texas students enjoy the meals served through the National School Lunch Program. Commissioner Millers' Farm Fresh Initiative encourages school nutrition professionals to serve more local foods in their programs and support local farmers, ranchers and distributors. This year's challenge will recognize more than 250 districts that participated by connecting students with local farmers, ranchers and distributors throughout October.  Best of the Bunch award winners met the highest standards of the Farm Fresh Challenge and have showcased extraordinary commitment to Texas agriculture.
