Wheat Elementary is an EE-2nd grade campus of approximately 375 students. Our instructional programs include PPCD (Pre-school Programs for Children with Disabilities), full day prekindergarten programs, gifted and talented, English as a second language, intensified instruction and intervention for reading and math through response to intervention (RtI) strategies, and web-based reading and learning.
At Wheat Elementary we focus on individualized and differentiated instruction for all students. As part of this we offer dynamic student-centered learning environments, assessed through a variety of digital and traditional methods. Technology and digital learning devices such as iPads, computers, interactive boards, and digital presenters serve as a means to enhance student engagement.
Wheat also offers age-appropriate and vertically aligned instruction of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), the state's mandated curriculum. These learning standards are put into place by the Texas Education Agency and are assessed beginning at 3rd grade with the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR). In Woodville ISD and at Wheat Elementary we strive for meaningful and purposeful interpretation of the TEKS through a balanced literacy approach, using guided reading and daily literacy learning centers (aka "The Daily 5"). We are also beginning to explore and expand our teaching methods to include projects-based learning, developmental assessments, rubrics, and varied means of progress monitoring.
